Flos’ debut in ceramics, Ronan Bouroullec’s Céramique is a trio of sculptural lights that merge the French designer’s sensible approach to volumes and silhouettes with the company’s push towards innovation.
Ceramics have been a key focus of the designer’s creative journey over the past few years, as his personal design explorations have ventured into the abstract. Using ceramic as a pictorial medium, the material has become the subject of a series of bas-reliefs and vases that are as much expressive compositions as they are functional vessels.
Ceramique is an entirely handcrafted collection made of a lead-free crystalline lacquered finish. The collection’s colours, Moss Green, Navy Blue and Rust Red, enhance the smooth surfaces, reflecting the material’s richness.
Ronan Bouroullec (born in 1971) studied at the École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts in Cergy. He began working with his brother, Erwan (born in 1976), in 1998.
Their work has covered many field ranging from the design of small objects as jewellery to spatial arrangements and architecture, from craftsmanship to industrial scale, from drawings to videos and photography.
Designs of the Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec are part of select international museums’ permanent collections such as the Musée National d’Art Moderne – Centre Pompidou and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Design Museum in London, and the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
The designers also maintain an experimental activity with Gallery Kreo, which is also essential to the development of their work.
Whilst the Bouroullecs’ collaborative designs involve a rigorous and complex process of research and testing, Ronan’s personal work offer no interferences, no plans, a line of personal work that is instinctive and unbounded.
