The inspiration of the Beetle chair was found in the insect world as the designers looked closely at the anatomy and movement of the beetle. Selecting a beetle as source of inspiration is based on the design duo’s fascination of how the external shell supports and protects the creature’s body together with its gentle and charming look. The design of this chair reinterprets the characteristic elements of the beetle’s sections: shape, shells, sutures, rigid outside and soft inside. The result is a chair that cunningly interprets the shell of this four-legged creature.
It took less than a decade for the Beetle dining chair to become a genuine design classic. Despite its robustness, it is designed to gently flex, providing comfort even after prolonged sitting, making it ideal for dining and meetings. The comfortable yet dynamic design makes this chair suitable for multiple environments.
GamFratesi Studio was established in 2006 by the Danish architect Stine Gam (born 1975) and the Italian architect Enrico Fratesi (born 1978). As a pair, they operate in symbiosis, sharing everything across their personal and professional lives. Gam takes a particular and thoughtful approach to design, while Fratesi moves more conceptually and energetically. Their design takes its creative drive from a fusion of tradition and renewal and in an experimental approach to their chosen materials and techniques.
With their diverse traditional background, they draw on the classic Danish furniture and craft tradition as well as the timeless Italian intellectual and conceptual approach. From this cross-cultural partnership, they create furniture that respectfully reflect tradition while also featuring unique embedded stories, symbols and associations, often expressed in a minimalist idiom.
This design duo has been working with Gubi since the inception of their studio and, with their own dual heritage, share Gubi’s ability to synthesize seemingly opposing ideas – the classic and the contemporary, the intellectual and the eclectic, the understated and the expressive, the manufactured and the unique.
