Serpentine in shape, beautifully balanced and gleaming like a jewel, the Aspide Lamp by Gianfranco Frattini is both a brilliantly practical piece of industrial design and an irresistibly playful design statement. First developed in 1970, the Aspide is a highly adjustable table lamp that looks like no other light before or since, but which still expresses the material and aesthetic tastes of its time.
The Aspide was designed as a versatile task lamp that can be manually adjusted to create either direct light for work or reading, or turned toward the wall to create a softer, ambient glow; infact the body of the lamp can be manually rotated 350o in both the neck and the head.
Gianfranco Frattini was born in Padua in 1926, but moved to Milan while he was very young. He earned an architecture degree from the Politecnico di Milano in 1953.
Shortly before graduating, Frattini joined the practice of his former professor, the legendary architect Gio Ponti, the figurehead behind the ‘Made in Italy’ movement. It was through Ponti’s studio that Frattini met the likes of Le Corbusier, Oscar Niemeyer, and Cesare Cassina, the latter of which became a lifelong friend and collaborator.
In 1956, Frattini founded his own practice with fellow architect and friend Franco Bettonica, who left in 1962. Always wide-ranging, Frattini’s projects varied from furniture for the likes of Cassina and Bernini to cookware for Lagostina. He also undertook high-profile commissions for iconic venues across Italy, including interiors in Capri and Portofino, and several Milanese landmarks.
One of the founders of the Associazione per il Disegno Industriale (ADI), Frattini was recognized in his lifetime with numerous nominations for the Compasso d’Oro, and a host of awards, including the Triennale di Milano medal and Gran Premio. Many of his products can be found in the collections of some of the world’s most prestigious museums of design and decorative art.
