The Tom Dixon Experiment

In yet another unprecedented collaboration with the acclaimed British designer, Area presented The Tom Dixon Experiment at their shop in Norteshopping in Porto, a real-time demonstration of creativity in which Tom Dixon reinterpreted his Groove chair in an exercise of formal and material experimentation. Before the live session, Tom spoke about his career and creative process to students from the School of Art and Design , who were then able to follow and watch the execution of the prototype that ensued. Using his Groove chair, the designer explored the application of a black polymer which, vulcanising on contact with the air, transformed the original piece into a new, dense and expressive form. The process, both technical and performative, revealed Tom's relentless curiosity and his ability to reinvent materials in a process of constant experimentation. The result was a unique piece — a synthesis of material, process and intuition — that reaffirms Tom Dixon's visionary character and his creative complicity with Area.
