Bringing further flexibility to one of the most adaptable light designs of the 20th century, GUBI’s new edition of Louis Weisdorf’s sculptural and inventive Multi-Lite design reimagines the unique lamp in a portable format.

Working in collaboration with the designer’s family, GUBI has redeveloped every component of the Multi-Lite Table Lamp in a more compact design, integrated a USB-charging facility, and incorporated a three-level, touch-activated dimmer function. The signature ring around the lamp now does double duty as a handle, allowing the lightweight lamp to be easily carried around and outside the home – the ideal companion to outdoor events and alfresco evenings.

Louis Weisdorf (1932– 2021) is a well-known Danish architect and industrial designer. After becoming one of the youngest designers to graduate from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1954, he worked across graphic, interior, architectural, and industrial design. Weisdorf described himself as a specialist in versatility, which sums up the prodigious and notable career of this multi-faceted designer.

His work is mostly recognizable as an exploration of uniform slats as a way to direct light. The designer was fascinated by the simple design principle of the repeating form that offered so much flexibility in appearance depending on the colour and positioning of the slats, while shielding the eye from direct bulb glare from all angles. Weisdorf had a passion for objects that can be changed by the user, involving them in the design process and offering a more dynamic design.

Today, Weisdorf is world-renowned, his lamps are sought-after collectors’ items and his Multi-Lite for Gubi appears in Chloé stores all over the world.
