Known to many as ‘the man who illuminated Finland’, the legendary designer and metalsmith Paavo Tynell is one of the leading lights of 20th-century industrial design . A classic 1950s Tynell design, the 1967 pendant expands on the design language developed in1948 for the 1965 pendant.
The 1967 is characterized by a conical canvas shade which exudes warm ambient light, with Tynell's signature brass hardware adding a subtle, premium expression. Below the bulb, a fabric diffuser modulates the light and, beneath this, a decorative brass detail gives each lamp a flourish of character, and subtly influences the play of light it generates.
Paavo Tynell (1890-1973) was an industrial designer. Known as the great pioneer of Finnish lighting design, Tynell was one of the founders and chief designers of Taito Oy – the first industrial producer of lighting fixtures in Finland. He rose to prominence in the 1930s and 40s where he collaborated with some of the most renowned Finnish architects, Alvar Aalto being the most notable one.
A master craftsman himself, Tynell’s designs were derivative of a traditional aesthetic with a modern sensibility, mixed with an extensive use of perforated and polished brass as material. Marked by delicacy and softness, his most famous forms in lightning echo the structures of nature; he adroitly created sculptural shapes reminiscent of the branches of trees, swirling snowflakes and seashells.
Today Paavo Tynell lamps and lighting are highly sought after by an international clientele of collectors and prices of his most important pieces have lately soared on auctions.
