Comprising a lounge chair, three-seater sofa, ottoman and floor lamp – all crafted from rattan – the Bohemian 72 Collection embodies Crespi’s career-long aim to create furniture that seamlessly unites indoor and outdoor living.
She never allowed curtains or screens to block the natural flow of light or air and had what her daughter has described as "a deep sentiment for the cosmic energy of nature".
Artist and designer Gabriella Crespi was born near Milan, Italy, in 1922. Crespi spent her childhood in Tuscany and the Scottish Hebrides, before returning to Italy to study art at the Brera Academy in Milan. In 1944, she enrolled at the Faculty of Architecture at the Politecnico di Milano. Crespi’s focus shifted from architecture to jewelry and furniture design in the 1950s, and by the 1960s she joined forces with Maison Dior to design striking home furnishings.
Her aesthetic was characterized by dualities, pairing modernist functionality with an eye for the baroque, and shifting between clean lines and sensuous curves. Although Crespi was drawn to precious woods and metals such as bronze and brass, she also appreciated the humility and versatility of rattan and bamboo. This fondness perfectly chimed with the high-society tastes of the 1970s, a period when rattan represented the height of interior sophistication.
Building on her family heritage, Crespi moved effortlessly among both European royalty and the Hollywood jet set, counting the likes of Audrey Hepburn, Gianni Versace, Valentino and Hubert de Givenchy among her clients and social circle.
When she died aged 95 in 2017, she left behind a repertoire of more than two thousand pieces, spanning furniture, jewelry, and sculpture – all imbued with an eclectic style that embraced both the organically whimsical and the formally geometric.
