The only comprehensive book on the fascinating life and work of the celebrated architectural designer, John Pawson.

This visual biography brings together John Pawson’s architecture, life, clients, travel, photography, design, books, and ideas. Written by Deyan Sudjic, an architectural historian and long-time friend, it explores the full scope of Pawson’s life, from his Yorkshire upbringing and time spent in Japan to the fashion years and the influence of art, and provides a thoughtful and intimate insight into his life, inspirations, and work.

It features wonderfully engaging stories and anecdotes about Pawson's work with such clients as Bruce Chatwin, Calvin Klein, Karl Lagerfeld, Shiro Kuramata, Martha Stewart, and many more. The book features documents, photography and ephemera, including never-seen-before images from Pawson's personal and professional archives – richly illustrated, this is the ultimate book on John Pawson.

Phaidon is a leading global publisher in the creative arts, producing books on art, photography, design, architecture, fashion, food, and travel, as well as children's illustrated books.

Founded in Vienna in 1923 by Dr. Béla Horovitz, Frederick Ungar, and Ludwig Goldscheider, Phaidon aimed to create affordable quality books. The company's hallmark large-format art books were introduced in 1937. Fleeing Nazi Vienna, Horovitz moved Phaidon to England, where it continued expanding its large-format series and launched significant art publishing programs, including "The Story of Art" by Ernst H. Gombrich in 1950, which sold 8 million copies. After Horovitz's death in 1955, his son-in-law, Harvey Miller, led Phaidon, maintaining its high standards. Ownership changes in the 1960s and 70s saw expansions and diversification.

In 1990, Richard Schlagman revitalized Phaidon, restoring its focus on excellent design and affordable prices. Significant publications included "The Silver Spoon" and the "Wallpaper* City Guides." Under new ownership since 2012, Phaidon continued growing, collaborating with high-profile figures and expanding into new categories like interior design. Acquisitions of Artspace in 2014 and The Monacelli Press in 2020 bolstered its offerings. Operating globally, Phaidon publishes in multiple languages and celebrated its centennial with special events and the book "100 Years of Creativity."
