The Daumiller Side Chair shares a design language with the Daumiller Armchair, being ele- gant yet robust and reassuringly solid in form, and featuring a similarly curved backrest. True to Daumiller’s design philosophy, the chair’s aesthetic transcends any specific era, making it as relevant today as ever.
Beneath its classic expression lies a forward-thinking innovation: a backrest that moves naturally with the body’s movements, offering a gentle tilt for flexible sitting positions, and providing support and comfort. The seat, supported by sturdy wood- en bars to balance comfort and stability, is made from handwoven natural rush, lending it a rich texture and a rustic appeal that complements the visible grain of the pine. The intri- cate weaving process demands a high level of craftsmanship to maintain the symmetry of the pattern while accommodating the seat’s varying width between the front and rear legs, showcasing precision and artistry.

Born in 1939 in Oberlenningen, in southern Germany, Rainer Daumiller started designing furniture while at elementary school. After finishing high school, Enwin Behr, a large furniture factory in the nearby town of Wendlingen, provided the right opportunity for Daumiller to complete his apprenticeship. Influenced by Rudolf Steiner's philosophy and Waldorf School teachings, Daumiller moved on to a factory in Marbach, Germany, where he learned to design and make chairs and upholstered furniture. In 1959, he moved to Denmark and applied for the Artisan School’s Furniture Department, later be called the Design School in 1960.
He studied under Ole Gjerløv Knudsen and Ole Vestergård, among others, who taught carpentry as well as craft skills in exciting new materials, including acrylic. Despite his experiments with this material, Daumiller had always been drawn to natural materials and one in particular – pine. On relocating to the town of Hirtshals in 1975, he contacted the local sawmill with a design for a chair and table that he had developed in his own kitchen. After exhibiting the pieces at the Bella Center exhibition venue in 1977, Hirtshals Sawmill (Savværk) produced the chairs and table for almost 25 years, supplying them to Danish stores in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Norway and Japan.
Daumiller has always been drawn to sustainability and simplicity, in both his life and his work. The robust, sculptural forms of his designs pay testament to a lifelong love of the natural world, and an intuitive material understanding – the ability to take what’s there, respond to its inherent properties, and create something special.
