The SEN table lamp is a unique and contemporary piece of light art that builds on tradition while revitalizing traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

Sen means lines in Japanese and the many bamboo strips that are bent into shape creates lines as well as shadow. The craftmanship of the lamps builds on the traditional art of takesensuji, which is a technique traditionally used to make insect cages and paper lanterns, while adding a modern look and use.

The lamp is carefully handcrafted in Japan by the artist Tani Toshiyuki together with bamboo masters using roughly 600 bamboo strips.

Toshiyuki Tani is the designer and crafter of unique lighting. He is a new generation of lighting designer and wishes to implement traditional woodcraft and bamboo-craft techniques into contemporary design. Tani has a degree from the Kobe Design University in Japan.

Toshiyuki Tani is noted for his approach of implementing traditional woodcraft and bamboo-craft techniques into contemporary design as well as his delicate sense of the interplay of light and shadow.

“I would like as many people as possible to play with the light, and feel the importance of passing down traditions.” - Toshiyuki Tani

MOTARASU was founded in Denmark in 2019 by Mikkel Zebitz. Like many other Danes before him, Mikkel was inspired by the distinct Japanese design and aesthetics. But where classic Danish design icons as well as contemporary designers to a wide extent merely have let Japan act as an inspiration, Mikkel wanted to change this – “motarasu” means “to change” in Japanese – by uniting the designers of the two nations to create contemporary design together.

Art and nature are the key elements in all of MOTARASU designs and the end-result are poetic, tactile and functional objects. MOTARASU works out of the showroom in Copenhagen with private clients, architects, galleries, and high-end retailers internationally.

“There is a clear common thread in the design style of Japan and Denmark, both nations focusing on the beauty of raw materials, quality and a simplistic philosophy. I wanted to establish a platform for designers from both countries to be able to inspire and be inspired by each other.” – Mikkel Zebitz
