REFINED MODERNIST MATERIALITY

Designed in 1964, the P3 and P3S capture the elegance and clarity that defined Italy’s postwar design renaissance.

Linear yet organic in expression, the P3 Lounge Chair and the P3S Chaise Longue are among the finest examples of mid-century rattan design. Architect Tito Agnoli, known for his refined modernist sensibility and material intelligence, collaborated closely with Bonacina 1889, the revered rattan specialists from Brianza – the heart of Italian furniture-making. More than 60 years after their debut, GUBI reintroduces these sculptural pieces, faithfully crafted in partnership with the original rattan masters.

Tito Agnoli was born to Italian parents in Peru in 1931. A trained painter, he returned to Italy after the war and studied with Sironi, before graduating in Architecture in 1959. He became an assistant to Gio Ponti and Carlo de Carlo. However, even in the early fifties, he was already carrying out an intense professional activity in the field of design, finding his inspiration by studying the Bauhaus and the functional movement.

Like so many of the greats of 20th-century Italian design, Tito Agnoli had an interest in, and a talent for, many different creative disciplines – from art and architecture to lighting and furniture. Most well known as an industrial designer, Agnoli worked with many materials over the course of his career, but it is for his rattan creations that he is truly celebrated. Today, more than half a century after his heyday, Agnoli’s ingeniously crafted cane designs are captivating a new generation of design lovers.
