Maap, designed by Erwan Bouroullec for Flos, is a wall-mounted lighting system that explores the idea of light as an expansive, immersive surface rather than a fixed point source. Developed over time through experimentation with ultra-thin materials, the project moves away from conventional design processes and embraces a more intuitive approach. At its core is a luminous structure supported by a cross-shaped frame with integrated LED sources, onto which a delicate diffuser is attached. This diffuser is not predefined in form; instead, it is shaped manually, creating a subtle and atmospheric glow that spreads evenly across a wide area, transforming the wall into a soft field of light.

What distinguishes Maap is its emphasis on human interaction and variability. The diffuser must be crumpled by hand during installation, resulting in a unique composition each time, guided by instinct rather than strict geometry. Magnetic fastening points, known as “Dots,” secure the material while allowing it to remain flexible and reconfigurable. This process introduces an element of unpredictability, evoking organic forms such as landscapes, maps, or cellular structures. In doing so, Maap becomes not only a lighting object but also an act of making—an evolving, tactile expression shaped by the user and its surrounding context.

Erwan Bouroullec is known for his work in furniture and lighting design with his brother Ronan. In 1999, they set-up their Paris design studio. Described by The New York Times as “representing poetic practicality”, the brothers’ creations span multiple fields of expression: bridging art and design, passing through craftsmanship, furniture and architecture.

Erwan and Ronan Bouroullec have co-created iconic designs for the likes of Vitra, Hay, Flos, Cassina, Ligne Roset, Magis, Mutina, Established & Sons and Kvadrat. Their designs are held in some of the world’s most coveted permanent collections, exhibitions have been devoted to their work, and monographs have been published, cataloguing some of their outstanding creations.

In recent years, the duo have expanded their repertoire into the public realm, bringing modern relevance to historic sites such as Bourse de Commerce - Pinault Collection (Paris, 2021) and the Champs-Elysées fountains (Paris, 2019). Erwan and Ronan’s collaboration is an ongoing dialogue, nourished by distinct personalities and their individual artistic experimentation.

Flos, the Italian brand of lighting par excellence, is on the borderline that unites and divides art and design, manufacturing and industry, individual creation and collective imagination.

With over 50 years of activity, Flos has received numerous Compasso D'Oro, one of the most important design awards in the world, the result of the work philosophy the brand has adopted since the beginning: to work with the best designers in the world (whether undiscovered talents or established masters), using revolutionary techniques and materials and always keeping abreast of cultural and market trends.

The entire history of Flos is full of transformative moments and design icons, such as the Arco and Parentesi lamps, designed by the Castiglioni brothers, or the Ktribe family of lamps by Philippe Starck. A Flos catalogue is not only an inventory of iconic lamps, but also a true directory of established designers such as Gino Sarfatti, Rodolfo Dordoni, Antonio Citterio, Marcel Wanders, Konstantin Grcic, Jasper Morrison, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec or Patricia Urquiola.

Today, experimentation opens up new paths with the use of avant-garde materials and hi-tech solutions, such as OLED technology and new eco-sustainable materials. Flos' commitment to sustainability is impressive. The company actively seeks environmentally friendly solutions throughout its design and manufacturing processes. It incorporates energy-efficient technologies and materials, ensuring that its lighting fixtures not only provide exceptional illumination but also minimize their impact on the planet.

In addition to its residential lighting solutions, Flos has also made significant contributions to the architectural lighting industry. The company has worked on prestigious projects around the globe, collaborating with architects to create custom lighting solutions that enhance the beauty and functionality of spaces.

Flos isn't just another lighting company, it's a cultural one. Merging tecnhology and emotion, it integrates light into architecture and nature, bringing a sophisticated, poetic sensibility to all its creations. Taking the long view, Flos creates sustainable and timeless lighting fixtures, each of which it refines to its truest essence.
