“The chair is resilient, elastic, and so light it doesn’t encumber space with its mass. It was the closest I came to a pure and precise kind of chair.” (The Design Art of Nicos Zographos, Peter Bradford, Monacelli Press, 2000).
This is how Nicos Zographos describes CH66: a chair so essential that it is purely functional, yet so ambitious that it reduces the structure to a continuous line of tubular steel. Profoundly inspired by the Bauhaus movement, this design draws upon the typical cantilever chair and creates a double curve between the backrest and the seat, outlining a profile that appears almost suspended in space. The result is a rigorous, elegant piece, defined by clean geometries, materials of the highest quality, and precise details. Part of the MoMA permanent collection in New York, the chair is revived in the Karakter x Cassina collection thanks to an in-depth study conducted in collaboration with his daughters, Athena and Fotini Zographos, providing a versatile solution suitable for both residential and contract environments.
Nicos Zographos was a Greek-born furniture, interior, and architectural designer, born in Athens in 1931. After studying in the United States, he worked for the influential architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill before founding Zographos Designs Limited in New York in 1964. His company became known for refined, minimalist contract furniture, especially chairs, tables, executive desks, and conference pieces made with high-quality materials and precise craftsmanship.
Zographos’ work is associated with modernist elegance: clean lines, balanced proportions, and a restrained use of materials such as steel, leather, glass, bronze, and marble. His pieces were used in major corporate and architectural interiors around the world, and his designs have been connected with leading modernist architects including I. M. Pei, Gordon Bunshaft, Walter Gropius, and Philip Johnson.
Karakter is a Danish design company founded on a spirit of exploration and an uncompromising attitude towards quality. Rooted in the Scandinavian design tradition with an international outlook, Karakter presents a portfolio of furniture, lighting and objects that is relevant, honest, expressive and sometimes playful.
The Danish company, acquired in 2019, changes perspective and becomes part of Cassina’s atmospheres with an extensive selection of Karakter x Cassina products. The two brands are connected by a deeply felt affinity thanks to Karakter’s collaborations with architects and designers of the calibre of Achille Castiglioni, Joe Colombo and Angelo Mangiarotti, perfectly aligned with the spirit of Cassina.
