The Silk Lantern by Ejner Larsen and Aksel Bender Madsen is a refined lighting family in silk, wood, and metal. Designed in 1951 but never put into production, it brings together Japanese-inspired lightness and Danish modern clarity in a soft, atmospheric glow. Conceived across floor, pendant, and wall versions, each design carries the cylindrical shade and material logic through its own scale. The natural silk shade diffuses the light into an intimate gradient of brightness and shadow, while walnut veneer rings frame the textile from above and below, and the black lacquered Steel structure gives the lamp definition and a floating appearance. Brought into production by GUBI for the very first time, the Silk Lantern brings a rarely seen Larsen and Bender Madsen design into contemporary interiors.

Among the defining figures of mid-century Danish design, Ejner Larsen (1917-1987) and Aksel Bender Madsen (1916-2000) created furniture and lighting distinguished by sculptural simplicity, exceptional craftsmanship, and a deeply human understanding of form and function. Emerging during the golden age of Danish furniture design, Larsen and Bender Madsen belonged to the generation that defined Scandinavian modernism on the international stage. Through their annual participation in the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibitions from the late 1940s onward, the duo contributed to a new vision of modern living – one rooted in craftsmanship, functionality, and understated elegance.
The partnership between Ejner Larsen and Aksel Bender Madsen was grounded in traditional craftsmanship and a shared belief in functional, enduring design. Larsen trained as an upholsterer, while Bender Madsen trained as a cabinetmaker before both continued their studies under Kaare Klint – widely regarded as the godfather of Danish modern design – at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.
