Paint-splattered studios, late-night lofts, and the pulse of New York form the backdrop of Basquiat: The World of Jean-Michel, a thematic exploration of Jean-Michel Basquiat and the cultural forces that shaped his work. The book examines major themes in his art, including Heads, collaborations with Andy Warhol, the Blue Ribbon series, and his explorations of the body, Black identity, and mythology.

Rare archival photographs show Basquiat at work, alongside handwritten notes from artists such as Keith Haring and Robert Rauschenberg, highlighting his influence on the creative world around him. Produced with ColourThemes and leading galleries and collectors, the book reproduces artworks with exceptional attention to color and texture. The hardcover features Red Skull (1982) and comes in a minimalist clamshell inspired by painter’s canvas. Designed for collectors and admirers of contemporary culture, the volume brings together artworks, archives, and voices that continue to define Basquiat’s legacy.

Founded in Paris in 1994 by Prosper and Martine Assouline, Assouline is the first luxury brand on culture. It began with the desire to create a new, contemporary style of book, using the couple's experienced eye for visually rich stories and compelling narratives.

Guided by their passion for knowledge, culture and travel, the Assoulines have since expanded their vision to 1,700 titles in three main collections, along with special editions and unique library accessories—a grand oeuvre of inspiring creations. Throughout the last quarter of a century, the brand has established a network of international boutiques in prominent locations across the globe.

With a distinguished team of creative talents—which includes the founders' son Alexandre—the brand continues to reinvent the notion of true luxury. Assouline’s roster of collaborators includes some of the world’s most respected brands, artists, photographers, writers and designers.
